About Breed Versus
Breed Versus is an independent reference site for people choosing between dog and cat breeds. It exists because most breed descriptions are written to sell you a puppy. Ours are written to tell you what the animal will cost you, how much it sheds, and what it is likely to need from a vet.
What we publish
- Breed pages with weight, height, lifespan, routine cost and lifestyle-fit scores.
- Head-to-head comparison pages for every pair of breeds in our dataset.
- Health conditions commonly associated with each breed, with links to sources.
Where the data comes from
- Breed descriptions — Wikipedia, under CC BY-SA, linked on each page.
- Photographs — Wikimedia Commons and Dog CEO, with the licence shown on the image.
- Adverse-event counts — the FDA openFDA animal and veterinary adverse-event database, queried by breed name.
- Cost and trait scores — maintained reference ranges, converted to US dollars and normalised to a 1–5 scale.
What we are not
We are not veterinarians. Nothing here is veterinary advice, and no page should be used to diagnose or treat an animal. Adverse-event counts reflect reports filed, not proven causation, and are not adjusted for how many animals of each breed exist.
How we make money
The site is supported by display advertising and, where relevant, affiliate links to products we would reference anyway. See the affiliate disclosure. Advertising never determines which breed we recommend or how a score is calculated.
